Author Visit

In Te Ngahere, an author came in and talked to us about her life and what she was interested about. Her name was Adele Broadbent, and one of her books was nominated in the 2011 New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards. She was fascinated in the paranormal, such as Aliens, BigFoot, Loch Ness Monster, Atlantis, Slender Man and other classified things in the world. She also wrote a book about the paranormal and soccer mixed together called Between. In part of the book, there was a woman named Mad Martha, she had a house that no one came into. People thought it was the witch's house, this is based in Adele Memories of her childhood because her friends would dare each other to touch the tin shed and back. What I enjoyed was her talking about the paranormal things that happen in the universe because lots of people don’t believe in extraterrestrial stuff in space or on the Earth.

The Scientific Method

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about the scientific method used to carry out a scientific investigation. We learnt about how it works and following the steps for the scientific method. After we understood it we made an infographic to show the steps for it. We would add little bits of writing and images to show the steps. The steps for the Scientific Method are ask a question, 2 gather information, 3 make a hypothesis, 4 experiment the hypothesis, 5 analyze your test results and present a conclusion. What I enjoyed was making the infographic because it was heaps of fun making it. What I could do next time is not add more writing in the infographic because it can take out space for the images.
Here is my Infographic.

Paihia School Kids Can Fun Day

On the 14th of June, Paihia School had our Kids Can fun day where we played different activities which it was organised  by the PAL leaders and Mrs Williams. I was lucky enough to be a PAL leader which was fun because we would run around and have fun which was the point of the Kids Can Fun Day. We did this because we were sponsored by Kids Can and we had had to fundraise money to give back what Kids Can gave us. What I really enjoyed was leading the students for the activities because we all had fun throughout the day. What I could do better for the fun day is not focus about the rules because the whole day was about fun.
Here are some fun photos.

Year 7 and 8's Quick Rip Tournament

In Te Ngahere, some of the year 7 and 8’s went to the Kerikeri rugby football field for quick rip. We all had different schools competing for the quick rip tournament. I saw some of my old friends like Tayla and Ataahua. Our team had three games to  play, we won two games and lost one, we tried so hard on the last game but at least we all had fun. What I enjoyed was having fun at the tournament and seeing my friends because we each tried our best of our ability and I got to see the friends I never saw for awhile.
Here are some photos about the Quick Rip Tournament.

Kupe Writing

In Te Ngahere we have been writing about New Zealander explores like Kupe, Maui and Nukutawhiti. We had to write our explorers of our choice is important to New Zealand history. We were writing how they got here, what were their impact on New Zealand and what the did in New Zealand. I did Kupe because the was the first person to find New Zealand. What I did well was putting my paragraphs in order and making sure that my sentences is correct. What I could do better is maybe add more detail to make my writing more interesting for the person who is reading it.
Here is my writing.

Kupe was a polynesian navigator who was the person/polynesian to find New Zealand in 925 AD because an octopus called Te Wheke-a-Muturangi drag kupe to New Zealand due to the fact that kupe was trying to kill the octopus for his tribe in Hawaiki but the didn’t kill the octopus because Te Wheke-a-Muturangi was by it's ancestor, Tamatea.

When he got to New Zealand he took a look around at the North Island for a place for his people at Hawaiki. So he went back to Hawaiki and told his villagers about New Zealand and so his villagers agree to come to New Zealand and explore New Zealand. A few days later the villagers said that they liked New Zealand.

Kupe then went back to Hawaiki to help some villagers hunt and find food for his people who stayed in Hawaiki because some of them didn’t want to go New Zealand or because there wasn’t any room to go on the waka due to the fact that if they go the wrong way, then they would be lost, hungry, thusty, no one around and nowhere to go. Kupe and his children departed New Zealand leaving 3 dogs to go hunt for food and protect the pa of Hokianga.

I think Kupe did a great job finding New Zealand because New Zealand is good with trees, nature and even people. I also think Kupe did a good job raising his people in New Zealand because New Zealand is a great country to stay in, including for the the tourist, for examples they can visited the statue of kupe in Wellington, go to the Treaty Grounds in Waitangi and even know how New Zealand got its name. And we can all say thanks to Kupe and his wife calling New Zealand Aotearoa and New Zealand.

Coding

In Te Ngahere we have been learning to code circles and parallelograms and we went on Code.org and created a parallelogram. We all created different designs in different ways and it was really fun. This was a part of maths for working on degrees because coding can help us with degrees in maths. What I enjoyed was creating the parallelogram with the code because we got to make whatever pattern we wanted to look like. What I could do better next time is not muck so much with the code because it can waste some time.
Here is a photo of my parallelogram.

Bay Bush Action

In Te Ngahere, Bay Bush Action came to Paihia School to talk about the endangered creatures in New Zealand like the kakapo, Kiwi and the New Zealand wood pigeon. Going through the slideshow Bay Bush Action talked to us why we should protect these creatures and kill the pests. But it turned out that we were the ones who brought these pest to New Zealand and let them eat our bird's and eggs but we are also the ones who can solve the problem by putting traps down and eliminating our pest and having more bird's in our native forest. What I enjoyed was learning why we should protect the bird's and set up more traps.
Here are some photos.
