Summer Learning Journey P1 2018

My Top 3 fun facts about New Zealand is:

3: There is no snakes in New Zealand.

2: New Zealand was named Aotearoa which means the land of a long cloud.

1: New Zealanders are also called kiwis but kiwi is not a fruit because a kiwi is a bird that can't fly.

What makes Paihia Special is because: The Treaty of Waitangi is important to the Bay of Islands because this was when the British came over to New Zealand and sign it on the 6th February 1840. This is a important history about New Zealand.

My beast looks green, with furry ears and a shaggy tail. It also has green and blue eyes when some detailed eye lashes. The beast is named ErroyBo. His is found in New Zealand in Auckland Museum in the war area.

Question about Sir Edmund Hillary:

How many medals have you won
Why did you do mountain exploring for a living
How did you overcome exploring
Were you afraid climbing Mount Everest
Were there course that you overcome climbing Mount Everest.

Smoothies

On the 25th of September, Whaea Gina came in again for energise. We made healthy smoothies with milk, yogurt, strawberry and banana. There are other ways to make smoothies like avocados, apples, greens, honey and more. What I enjoyed is drinking the smoothies because they were delicious and so yum.
Here a some photos.

Duffy Books

On the 25th of September the whole school had our first Duffy assembly. We learnt the Duffy motto and the Duffy song. We each got two free books so we can read more than sitting down on the game all day. I enjoyed reading the books because I don’t read that much, but now I read. What I could do better is choose the right books properly so I can get the books I want.
Here are some photos.

Takeaways

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about healthy and unhealthy takeaways. We learnt how much fat there is in takeaways and talked about whether it’s a healthy heart, or a unhealthy heart. We talked about food like Mcdonalds, Sushi, Wendy’s, Subway and Chinese food. What I enjoyed was learning how much fat there is in takeaways. What I could use this information for in the future is tell other kids about this so they need to learn how much fat there is in takeaways.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

In Te Ngahere we have been doing Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori week. We each were put into 10 groups and did 9 rotations. We did whare whare, kapa haka, singing the days of the week, learning how Waitangi got its name and finding objects in the classroom. What I did well is looking after the little kids because they needed help with Te Reo. What I could better is try to listen a little bit more and focus on what we were learning.

Gaming

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about gaming. We had to do a quiz about how much we use online gaming. There were 20 questions and I had to admit how much I game because I am a good video gamer. (I am good at Pac Man and Zombs Royale.io.) What I enjoyed is learning why kids are getting addicted to video gaming. I think I could do better on my gaming by cutting back on the hours I spend gaming.
Here are the results.

Beeswax Wraps

In Te Ngahere we have been doing beeswax wraps. We got to design the fabric so we don’t just have a blank piece of fabric. We had to make beeswax wraps so we don’t have to use plastic wraps.  I drew Pac-Man, the Jacksepticeye logo and the Illuminati. What I enjoyed is drawing because drawing is what I do at home. What I think I could do better is less drawings on my beeswax so they are spaced out better.

My group is working on our pallet design and we are almost finished.
What I did well is listening to my group and working together as a group.
What I enjoyed is sanding the pallets because I like sanding.
What I could do better is hold the pallet correctly because I almost hurt myself.
Here is my group’s plan.

Healthy and Unhealthy Drinks

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about eating healthy. Whaea Gina came in and talked about healthy drinks and unhealthy drinks. We learnt about how much sugar there is in fizzy drinks and drinks like V and Red Bull. We put them in each box like traffic lights. Green means everyday, orange means once a week and red means once a month. On the green box was milk and water, on the orange box there was powerade, chocolate milk and juice and on the red box was fizzy drinks and V. What I enjoyed is that I got to know how many teaspoons of sugar there is in drinks, for example chocolate milk has 7 teaspoons of sugar and coke has 10 teaspoon of sugar in it. . What I want to do is make a google drawing to explain what I learnt and to show how I learnt it.
Here are some photos.

Ukulele Lessons

In Te Ngahere we have been learning how to play the ukulele. Our ukulele teacher was Alison, she is from Ireland. Before we got to play with the ukulele we had to learn about the ukulele. What I did well is that I got the basics about the ukulele like putting my fingers in the right place and playing the ukulele. What I could do better is try to work on playing the ukulele correctly like moving my fingers and not pressing the string too hard.

What Makes A Healthy Ecosystem

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about healthy ecosystem. We had to write about what makes a good ecosystem. We explained what lives in the ecosystem and what is a healthy ecosystem. What I did well is I got it finished in term 1 because I needed to look at the success criteria. What I need to do next is look at the success criteria in the first place so I can get it finished earlier. Here is my writing about what makes a good ecosystem. Hope you enjoy it.

A healthy ecosystem must have support from everything in it, such as producers, consumers, decomposer, inorganic matter, and organic matter.

Organic and inorganic matterA ecosystem has non-living and living things which is inorganic and organic matter. Non-living things are called inorganic matter like sand, rocks, air and water. They are  part of an ecosystem. Living things are called organic matter like sharks, fish, shrimps and stingray’s. They are also part of an ecosystem.

What lives in a ecosystem and how does it workWhat lives in a Marine ecosystem is Fish, Kina, Lamprey, Sharks, Crayfish, Kelp, Octopus and much more. A ecosystem works by a lot of living organisms that interact with each other. There are three of the organisms which is producers, consumers and decomposer. Producers make food for themselves, consumers eat the producers because consumers can’t make food, and decomposer breaks down the dead or decaying organisms.

ConclusionIf people interfere with the ecosystem and don’t care about our ecosystem, the ecosystem will be unbalanced and there will be no fish and there will be a kina barren, which is bad. That is why we need to have a healthy ecosystem.

Geckos

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about te ngahere to make connections between what we read or view. Ethan, Tk, Dalton and I did a presentation about geckos, We had to put in our presentation what it eats, where it lives, what are it’s threats, what job does it do in the ngahere, why is it important to protect it and facts. What I enjoyed is adding spot the gecko because I thought it would be fun for other people. What I can do better is I can let other people talk when we are presenting.

Bay Bush Action

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about saving birds and animals. People from Bay Bush Action, Brad and Stella told us about birds and other endangered animals. What we did on Friday is that we set traps around the school and the plan is Paihia School is going to be the first pest free school in New Zealand. What I enjoyed is putting traps around the school and learning about endangered birds and animals.

A Moment In Time Writing

In Te Ngahere we were writing a moment in time story. The moment in time story was about the forest. What I did well is that I got more information, what I could do better is to not use I, we and you.

Here is my writing

The forest is like a tree giving another tree a high five. The dirt is like quicksand making people stuck in the mud. The wind is like giving the boats and bird's energy to move. The birds are like singing to their friends and making people annoyed with the birds sing.

Trees are like emeralds growing in their nest like little birds. The clouds are like dinosaurs in the sky having a dinosaur fight. I can see trees growing like a house being rebuilt. The bird’s are like the ‘Twitter’ bird tweeting to each others like on twitter.

The Tui is like talking to another bird from the other side of the tree. The fog is like a sand storm coming our way to destroy the trees. The rocks are like diamonds stuck in the rock for a long time until a brave and mighty warrior come and get the diamond out of the rock to give it to his king.

kaitiakitanga o te moana

In Te Ngahere, last term we were learning about kaitiakitanga o te moana. We have learning this to see if we can look after our taonga and to see why Matai beach was banned. What I did well is that me and my group mates work as a group, what I could do better is to not social talk to my friends during learning time.

Animation about Food Chains

In Te Ngahere we have been making animations we've been making animations about food chains. When we finished our animations we had to screencastify our animations and put it on a google slide called Te Ngahere Movie Premiere. My animation was about Kelp using sunlight to get energy, kina eat the kelp to get energy, crayfish eat kina, carpet shark eat crayfish and a great white shark eat a carpet shark. What I did well was that I got my animation finished on the last day, what I could do better is not to put other things on my animation because it wasn’t part of the topic.

My Poem

In Te Ngahere we were writing our own poem, but in metaphors. We were not allow to use I and because, it was easy a-bit. What I did well in my learning is that I probably got about 4 metaphors, what I  need to do next time in my learning is to try not use simile on my writing. I hope you like my poem. :)

Dayton is a Bugatti, fast and ready to go.

Dayton is an emoji, happy and cool.

Dayton is a pug, cute and cuddly.

Dayton is a couch, soft and comfortable.

My Pepeha

For 2 weeks in Te Ngahere we have been learning how to explain our pepeha. We need to know our pepeha so we know where we are from. What we did is that we had to do it on a powtoon or a presentation. I made it on a powtoon. What I did well is that I didn't get distracted by my friends, but the problem was that powtoon was a bit glitchy but I manage to get it done. What I can do better is that I need to not put capitals in the wrong places on my pepeha.

The Post War(S)

I have put a pohutukawa tree and a kiwi for represent New Zealand. I put a background of he ocean because we love swiming.

To Mrs.Lindsay
I would like to change the school about the rubbish I am seeing rubbish everyday at the school and it is bad for the animals because animals are being extinct.

From Dayton.

If I was Scotty Morrison I would interview would with the Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern because I want to tell her about the rubbish of New Zealand. I would like to find out if she will have a talk with the council and talk about the rubbish and let the people know about the rubbish in New Zealand.

I think students should pay to go to university so we can have some clothing and food for other people.
